Cal Chorale
Formerly the Women’s and Men’s Chorales, Cal Chorale is UC Berkeley’s most inclusive choral ensemble. With 50-60 singers, the Chorale welcomes singers of all genders and personal & music backgrounds. Where other ensembles at Cal focus on a specific type of choral repertoire, Cal Chorale sings music of all styles and genres, including classical, folk, pop, and jazz styles in all voicings. We offer opportunities to develop vocal technique in a variety of styles and to strengthen theory and musicianship skills. We perform at several on and off campus functions every semester, including collaborations with other Cal choral ensembles. Cal Chorale was formed in August 2022 under the direction of Rebecca Seeman.
Cal Chorale’s aim is not only to sing beautifully, but to have a great time together. We strive to create a fun and welcoming atmosphere, where singers can connect both musically and socially. Students often have dinner following rehearsals and gather for other social activities, such as movie nights and outings. We provide several student leadership opportunities and students help to guide the ensemble in multiple ways, including selecting and arranging repertoire, directing rehearsals, marketing, social media, arranging social events, and more.
Cal Chorale rehearses on Wednesdays and Fridays 4:10 – 6:00 pm in the Choral Rehearsal Room (CRH) in the Cesar Chavez Basement. We also offer optional one-on-one and sectional rehearsals on Mondays 4–6 for students that would like extra musical support. While full participation is highly encouraged, some singers have conflicts with part of rehearsal time.
