Cal Chorale

Cal Chorale is one of UC Berkeley’s newest choral ensembles. With 20-30 singers, the Chorale welcomes singers of all genders and musical backgrounds. The ability to read music at sight is strongly desired. While other ensembles at Cal focus on a specific type of choral repertoire, Cal Chorale sings music in a variety of languages and genres, including classical, folk, pop, and jazz styles. We perform at on and off campus functions every semester, including collaborations with other Cal choral ensembles.

Cal Chorale’s aim is not only to sing beautifully, but to have a great time together. We strive to create a fun and welcoming atmosphere, where singers can connect both musically and socially. Students often have dinner following rehearsals and gather for other social activities, such as movie nights and outings. Students sometimes help to guide the ensemble in different ways, including selecting and arranging repertoire, directing sectional rehearsals, marketing, social media, and arranging social events.  Cal Chorale rehearses on Tuesdays and Fridays 4:10 – 6:00 pm in the Choral Rehearsal Room (CRH) in the Cesar Chavez Basement. We occasionally offer sectional rehearsals on Mondays 4–6 for students that would like the extra musical support. While full participation is highly encouraged, a singer may occasionally have a conflict with part of rehearsal time, and allowances are made for this as is necessary.

Auditions for new singers will be held on Sept.3,4 between 4 and 6pm. Contact director Paul Flight at paul.flight@berkeley.edu for questions or fill out this form to sign up for an audition.
