UC Men's Chorale was founded in 1885 as the UC Glee Club, the Men's Chorale is the oldest college chorus on the West Coast. Repertoire is drawn from all historical periods from concert music, popular and folk songs from many cultures, and ever popular Cal songs. Membership is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Rehearsals: MWF 4:15-6pm UC Women's Chorale draws its repertoire from the wealth of choral music for female voices from all historical periods and styles. Touring frequently, Women's Chorale also performs at a variety of University and community events including Mark Morris Dance Group's The Hard Nut. The chorale is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Rehearsals: MW 4:15-6pm UC Alumni Chorus is a thriving 95 member ensemble, composed of Cal alumni, alumni of other UC campuses, and UC Berkeley faculty, staff and graduate students. The chorus was founded in 1985 by a group of UC Choral Ensembles alums. They are known for their high quality performances and variety of their repertoire. UCAC enjoys touring, having performed in Australia, New Zealand, England, Eastern Europe, China and St. Petersburg and Baltic countries. Rehearsals: M 7:30-10pm UC Men's Octet is UC Berkeley's award-winning all male a cappella group. They delight audiences young and old with their harmonious sound and zany antics. They have a wide repertoire, ranging from barbershop and doo-wop to 80's and 90's hits. The Octet won first place at the International Competition of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) in 1998 and 2000. The Octet performs frequently throughout the Bay Area and has travelled all over the world. They perform every Wednesday at 1pm at Sather Gate during the academic year. Rehearsals: Tu 5-8pm, F 5-6pm, Sun 12-3pm California Golden Overtones are UC Berkeley's award-winning all-female a cappella group. The Overtones sing a wide range of music from popular jazz of the 1930's, doo-wop, current hits, and Cal fight songs. The Overtones, who placed second in ICCA, frequently produce their own recordings and tour frequently the East Coast or abroad. They perform every Friday at 1pm at Sather Gate during the academic year. Rehearsals: TuTh 6-9pm, Sun 5-8pm Noteworthy is a new, all-male small ensemble. Their repertoire consists of songs ranging from standard barbershop to contemporary alternative. The primary focus lies in the writing, development, and showcasing of original a cappella compositions and arrangements. Noteworthy promotes and encourages the performance of music created by the Cal student body. The group's creative repertoire adds a unique flair to the a cappella community at Berkeley. Rehearsals: MW 7:30-10pm, Fri 4-6pm Cal Jazz Choir is a ten member ensemble dedicated to exploring the colorings of vocal jazz. CJC draws its repertoire from the traditional standards of jazz greats such as Duke Ellington, Bill Evans, Cole Porter, and Joe Garland, as well as from popular jazz groups like the Real Group, Take Six, Singers Unlimited, and Manhattan Transfer. Performances sometimes feature the talents of local jazz combos but are usually a cappella and will frequently include plentiful scat solos. Rehearsals: Tu 5-8pm, Th 5-7pm Perfect Fifth is a small Baroque style a cappella choir consisting of 8-12 singers. This group often performs for the Music Department's Wednesday Noon Concert Series and appears as guests on other concert programs. Advanced undergraduate and graduate singers bring Renaissance and contemporary madrigals and art songs to a diverse array of Bay Area audiences. Past performances include YoYo Ma's Silk Road Project, Mark Morris' The Hard Nut, UC Choral Ensembles concerts and a tour of China. Rehearsals: W 7-9:30pm, Su 3-5pm BareStage is committed to the development of student creativity through the performing arts by initiating and activating student participation in productions throughout the school year. Devoted to the cultivation of original work and new, rarely performed musicals, BareStage provides a place for student actors, directors, writers, producers, technical designers, and musicians to practice and develop their craft in the context of a student supported environment. |
