UC Choral Ensembles, also known as UCCE, offers students many exciting learning and performance opportunities including the development of musical and vocal skills and the exploration of a wide-variety of musical styles. Performances range from formal concerts with professional soloists and orchestra to participation in Cal Spirit events. UCCE is comprised of nine groups: UC Men's Chorale, UC Women's Chorale, UC Men's Octet, California Golden Overtones, Cal Jazz Choir, Perfect Fifth, UC Alumni Chorus, BareStage, and Noteworthy. UC Choral Ensembles is the center for extra-curricular choral activities at UC berkeley. As evidenced below, UCCE is a "happening" campus organization. Three groups recently produced their own CD recordings and many of our ensembles tour. These tours have included trips to Southern California, Oregon, New Orleans, New York City as well as Japan, China, Hungary, England, Czech Republic, Spain and Italy. The nine ensembles of UCCE offer students a rich variety of exciting learning and performing opportunities, including the chance to: Develop musical and vocal skills. Within a two-year span, a first-time singer, trained in the UC Men's Chorale, recently found himself on the Carnegie Hall stage helping the UC Men's Octet win the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella. Explore a wide variety of musical styles. Three separate UC groups qualified for three of the six spots in the 2001 Regional Championship of Collegiate A Cappella. Participate both musically and socially with students from every academic discipline. Upon receiving his bachelors degree in Business and his first series of vocal coachings from one of UCCE's staff instructors, a recent graduate is the only auditionee in the area named to the national touring company of "Rent." Performances range from formal concerts with professional soloists and orchestra to participation in Cal "spirit" events. All UCCE groups take part in the annual Fall Retreat, Halloween Show, the famous Cal-Stanford Sing-Off, Holiday Concert, Caroling in San Francisco, and the AIDS benefit concert. Whether you are an experienced musician or budding thespian, there is a place for you in UC Choral Ensembles. UC Choral Ensembles is part of Cal Performance's Student Musical Acitvities, a thriving center for extra-curricular music training and performance at berkeley. Complementing and augmenting Music Department performance opportunities, SMA is run by and for students interested instruction in choral, jazz and marching band repertoire and supports students in the development of musical skills as well as experience in group and arts management. Mark Sumner Director Mark's prior teaching experience includes teaching at UC Santa Barbara and USC in addition to several other institutions; he has an extensive background as a professional performer and conductor. He has also served as music director and stage director for various theater companies and churches in Southern California, Oklahoma and Texas. He has also served as the Vice President and CFO of Hunter Communications, Inc. and as the Comptroller, past CFO and Chairman of the Board for Hunter Media, Inc. A native of Oklahoma, Mark has a Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Music from the University of Southern California. He received his Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas and a Bachelor's degree in music from Oklahoma State University. He is the recipient of several music scholarships including the Gordon Getty Music Scholarship from 1989-90. He was also the recipient of a Distinguished Service Award from the Sapulpa Board of Education in 1989 (one of only two given in the school system history).William Garcia Ganz Assoicate Director Bill is very active in the Bay Area choral arena, and has directed the San Francisco Cable Car Chorus and the Golden Gate Men's Chorus since 1991. He is director of two of the nine extracurricular choruses of the UC Choral Ensembles. Bill earned a Master's degree in conducting from San Francisco State University, studying with Byron MacGilvray, Laslo Varga, and Karla Lemon.
